Black Girl Magic - magic of the afro

Magic of the 'fro'

There's something special and spiritual about our natural hair as black people. It grows upwards, mimicking the sun which is a source of life. It is a halo and that confirms our godliness. It baffles me why we choose and prioritise hair of the oppressor, is it also part of self hate and brainwashing, that what is black is not beautiful and what is "straight hair and white" is? For me there's a deeper meaning to why we wear wigs (not just preference) as black people and hate our natural hair. The evidence would be when a woman wears her kinky curls she labels it "bad hair days". It may seem trivial but these 'trivial matters' contribute to a much larger conundrum - which is the self hate we've been taught and grew up with.

The look we all know and admire most

Some or a lot might say that I'm speaking nonsense, but subconsciously a lot of damage has been done, and healing and self acceptance will restore us as a race. There's a lot of pressure to look a certain way - have a type of hair, follow certain trends to be deemed beautiful by society, but society is very skewed and damaged. There's really no positivity in being influenced by broken people themselves. Colourism is also another challenge, to the extent that our beautiful dark skinned women bleach their skin to be deemed beautiful by societal norms. To which I say again, a broken society. Beauty is a façade that keeps changing throughout the years. Let's make our natural blackness the standard of beauty; dark skin and halo hair. Words of successful black women would give some confidence on what being a magical black woman is, despite the challenges. We should look to leaders who inspire a better black and more authentic society.
